Integrative Anatomy

Outline

The Department of Integrative Anatomy offers the typical gross anatomy course on a cadaver for second year medical students. For the research, the laboratory utilizes the electron microscopical and immunohistochemical techniques to explore the ultrastructures of the anterior pituitary glands, pancreas and liver.

Anatomy and Neuroscience

Outline

Our current projects are focused on (1) trying to understand how auditory hair cells convert sounds such as speech and music into electrical signals that the brain can interpret; (2) trying to understand how newborn neurons in the adult hippocampus are integrated into functional circuits of the existing network. Our lab consists of highly talented individuals with expertise in microscopy, molecular biology and electrophysiology needed to efficiently advance our research.

Biochemistry

Outline

The main research topics in the Department of Biochemistry are to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD), and to develop drug targets for treatment of AD and the methods for prevention of AD development and its progression. Ongoing research projects are the altered brain lipid metabolism-causing AD pathologies including Aβ accumulation and tau phosphorylation, temperature-dependent progression/prevention of AD pathophysiology, and the studies to investigate how oral diseases induce AD.

Cell Biology

Outline

The Department of Cell Biology was founded for the purpose of basic research and education in the field of Cell Biology in 1980. Dr. Makoto Nakanishi took over as Head in 2000. We have investigated molecular mechanisms of cell cycle progression and its checkpoint systems. Our research goal is to develop a new anti-tumor strategy using genes involved in checkpoint systems.

Cell Physiology

Outline

The aim of our research is to elucidate the cellular mechanisms regulating the contractility of smooth muscle. Our principal focus is discovering how spontaneous activity in smooth muscle is initiated and propagated and determining how this autorhythmicity is disrupted in disease. Neurohumoral and endothelial modulation of smooth muscle rhythms and contractility are also being investigated. More lately, the active function of pericytes in the microvasculature has been eagerly explored. Our group applies an integrative approach, using mainly electrophysiology and intracellular calcium imaging, as well as fluorescent immunohistochemistry.

Neurophysiology and Brain Science

Outline

The projects include basic neurosciences in neural transplantation, circadian rhythm and applied physiology to heat exposure. Dopaminergic systems in the brain, especially trophic factor, mechanism of neuronal differentiation, behavior, are focused to physiological response and repair disturbed brain functions.

Gastroenterological Surgery

Outline

Our department researches surgical oncology and treatment strategies of both digestive tract and hepato-biliary pancreatic diseases widely. We focus especially on the molecular biology concerning invasion and metastasis formation of malignant tumor in these fields. Magnificent goal of our research is to improve the prognosis of cancer patients.

Oncology,Immunology and Surgery

Outline

Our department makes studies on the biologic reaction concerning oncology and immunology after thoracoscopic lobectomy of the lung, the development of innovative surgical procedures, and the safety of thoracoscopic surgery for locally advanced lung cancer. Furthermore, we investigate the genetic aberration of malignant diseases of the thymus and lung by the use of molecular-biological techniques. In the breast and endocrine surgery, the mission is the contribution of the advances of breast cancer research and treatment. Our research is especially focused on the molecular oncology in estrogen receptor positive breast cancer and triple negative breast cancer using human breast cancer samples and breast cancer cell lines.

Nephro-urology

Outline

The Department of Nephro-Urology is dedicated to providing exceptional urologic training. The program incorporates supervised clinical experience in adult and pediatric urology with laboratory and clinical research opportunities to offer residents a broad base for the future. Especially urolithiasis, hypospadias, oncology, voiding function, male infertility and laparoscopic surgery are characteristics in medical treatment and research.

Cardiovascular Surgery

Outline

We operated on about 250 patients with cardiovascular diseases in 2006 and 80% of patients had congenital heart disease; however, we address the problem in adult cardiac surgery. Our interests in study are the surgical therapy of complex heart defects, pulmonary circulation and protection of reperfusion injury at operataion.

Ophtdalmology and Visual Science

Outline

Our basic research mainly focuses on age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Using in vitro three-dimensional cell cultivation models of retinal pigment epithelium, we aim for elucidating the physiological functions of retinal pigment epithelium and its relationship to the pathology of age-related macular degeneration and generating. Research on drug delivery system which will be helpful for the treatments of vitreoretinal diseases execute using in vivo model. Using in vivo models of laser-induced choroidal neovascularization, we plan to investigate into pathogenic mechanisms and development of novel treatment strategies for age-related macular degeneration in cell biological perspectives. Also, our research specializes in inflammatory cytokines expression during retinal neovascularization and after laser photocoagulation therapy on diabetic retinopathy using oxygen-induced retinopathy models.

Geriatrick and Environmental Dermatology

Outline

Department of Geriatric and Environmental Dermatology is engaged in translational research for the development of phototherapy based on the photobiologic mechanisms each ultraviolet wavelength. Regulatory T calls (Treg) can be induced and modulated by ultraviolet. Other research focus is environmental factors-induced skin aging. Based on world-wide collaboration, the effects of tobacco smoking and air pollution on premature skin aging are also being investigated from basic molecular analyses to epidemiological studies.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Outline

Oral and Maxillofacial surgery deals with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the oral and Maxillofacial region, temporomandibular joint and associated structures. This includes the removal of teeth, placement of dental implants, removal of tumors and treatment of deformities of the regions.
